Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and President of the Asogli Traditional Area, has highlighted the urgent need for a renewed national focus on reviving Ghana’s agricultural sector. Speaking at the 41st National Farmers Day celebration in Ho on December 5, 2025, he acknowledged the crucial role farmers play in national development, while also pointing out the significant challenges facing the sector.
“Farmers contribute immensely to our nation by providing food, generating foreign exchange through exports of crops like cocoa, and employing about 44% of the workforce,” he stated. However, he emphasized that ongoing challenges necessitate both motivation and tangible support to bolster farmers’ efforts.
“This is why it’s essential to inspire our farmers so they can thrive. We need the government to enhance its commitments, while citizens should support local agriculture by choosing to ‘eat Ghana’ to foster growth and secure our future,” Togbe Afede urged.
He also expressed concern over decreasing yields in key crops, particularly cocoa, and referenced his recent visit to Hohoe, where he inaugurated a cocoa processing factory, to illustrate the sector’s untapped potential. “While our country could historically produce over a million bags of cocoa in a year, we are now struggling with value addition. We must all collaborate to increase the value of our products,” he remarked, noting similar declines in cotton and coffee production and calling for collective action to address these issues.
