The Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has unveiled a significant government-backed housing initiative to tackle accommodation challenges faced by military personnel across the country. During a speech on December 14, 2025, at the end-of-year religious parade at Burma Camp, he announced that the government has approved the construction of over 2,000 housing units nationwide, with approximately 700 earmarked for Accra.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong expressed optimism about the future, stating that next year would see substantial improvements in accommodations for military personnel. He emphasized the government’s plans to provide additional housing units—up to 8,000—over the next five years, contingent upon the successful implementation of the initiative. The goal is to ensure that Armed Forces personnel can live in dignified conditions, highlighting the commitment to their well-being.
Beyond housing, Lt Gen Agyapong also spoke about a significant retooling package approved by the President, aimed at enhancing the Ghana Armed Forces’ capabilities. This initiative includes the acquisition of new helicopters, long-haul jets for the Air Force, and offshore patrol boats for maritime security. The Army will also receive enhanced armored vehicles and personnel carriers, along with updated weapons and protective gear.
In addressing public concerns regarding the welfare of Ghanaian troops serving on UN peacekeeping missions, the Chief of Defence Staff dismissed allegations of underpayment as misinformation. He stressed the importance of relying on accurate information and urged the public to be discerning, reassuring them of the government’s commitment to improving both living conditions and operational readiness for the Ghana Armed Forces.
