DR Congo Stuns Nigeria, Advances to World Cup Playoffs Amid Controversy

DR Congo triumphed in a tense penalty shootout, defeating Nigeria 4-3, leading Nigeria’s manager Éric Chelle to allege ‘maraboutage’ after the match.
Once a powerhouse, Nigeria‘s hopes for the 2026 World Cup were dashed as they were eliminated in the continental playoff final.

The match, held in Rabat, ended 1-1 after extra time, culminating in a penalty shootout that saw Nigeria miss crucial penalties.
Following the match, Chelle confronted DR Congo’s coaching staff, claiming that ‘voodoo’ practices influenced the outcome, which he claimed was evident during the shootout.

He mimicked gestures he alleged were made by the opposing staff during the penalties.
Despite Chelle’s accusations, Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong focused on the team’s effort, expressing pride in their performance over the past months while acknowledging the heartbreak of the loss.

The match began dramatically, with Nigeria taking an early lead through Frank Onyeka, only for DR Congo to equalize thanks to Meschak Elia. However, Nigeria’s attack faltered after striker Victor Osimhen was substituted due to injury, allowing DR Congo to gain confidence.

As the penalty shootout progressed, Nigeria struggled, missing their first two kicks before battling back. However, a crucial save by DR Congo’s substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu on Semi Ajayi’s attempt sealed Nigeria’s fate.

Chancel Mbemba’s successful spot-kick sent DR Congo through to the inter-confederation playoffs.
DR Congo, who last appeared in the World Cup in 1974, celebrated their victory, keeping their hopes alive for the upcoming tournament alongside teams from various confederations. The draw for the playoffs is set for Thursday.
