President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana’s trade with China is steadily increasing, with bilateral trade reaching US$11.8 billion in 2024—marking a growth of over 7% from the previous year. In an exclusive interview with the China Global Television Network (CGTN), he emphasized that China is Ghana’s largest trading partner and expressed optimism for continuing economic growth between the two nations.
“Trade between Ghana and China has continued to expand, now totaling $11.8 billion in 2024, which reflects a more than 7% annual increase,” Mahama stated. He added that the recently implemented zero-tariff policy would further enhance trade conditions, creating an environment for even greater business exchange.
This interview coincides with the celebration of 65 years of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China, a milestone seen as an opportunity to explore new avenues for partnership amid a changing global context. During the CGTN Leaders Talk program hosted by Wang Guan, President Mahama reviewed his recent discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and highlighted China’s proposed Global Governance Initiative aimed at fortifying ties with developing nations during challenging geopolitical times.
Mahama also underscored progress toward a potential zero-tariff trade agreement and praised China’s ongoing support for Africa’s infrastructure, industrialization, and vocational training efforts. As Ghana strives for full economic transformation following its political independence, the President noted that closer collaboration with China will be pivotal in shaping the country’s future development.
