The World Health Organisation (WHO) has initiated vaccination efforts for frontline health workers and individuals who have come into contact with those infected in response to a new Ebola outbreak in the Kasai Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

An initial shipment of 400 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine has arrived in Bulape, the outbreak’s epicenter, sourced from a national stockpile of 2,000 doses. The International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision has also sanctioned the distribution of an additional 45,000 doses to help control the outbreak.

This outbreak, which was officially declared in early September, marks the DRC’s first case in three years.

According to the health ministry in Kinshasa, there have been 32 suspected cases, 20 confirmed cases, and 16 fatalities linked to the virus, which is prevalent in the country’s dense tropical forests.

WHO Programme Area Manager Patrick Otim cautioned that the outbreak has the potential to spread further, especially following the confirmation of a case located 70 kilometers from Bulape. He pointed out a moderate risk of cross-border transmission, particularly to neighboring Angola.

Otim stressed the urgency of the situation, warning that any delays in response could complicate containment efforts. Aid workers have raised concerns about diminishing foreign assistance and the weakening of international support systems.
