UG SRC President Defends ’90-Year-Old’ Car Awarded to Miss UG 2025 Winner

The University of Ghana’s Student Representative Council (SRC) President, artiste Guru, has responded to allegations regarding the condition of the vehicle awarded to the winner of the Miss UG 2025 pageant. In a video that has gained traction on social media, Guru addressed claims made by pageant winner Mariam Jasmine Saaka, who said the car is around 90 years old.

Guru suggested that Saaka might consider visiting Manhyia Palace, where he pointed out that even cars over 100 years old are still in use. He questioned the availability of genuinely new cars in Ghana, emphasizing that the functionality of the vehicle is what matters most. “You claim the car is too old, but it did have ignition when handed over to you,” he stated.

The issue arose when Saaka, crowned Miss University of Ghana 2025 in August, expressed her disappointment over the vehicle’s condition. In her own social media video, she detailed the numerous mechanical problems with the black Toyota Vitz, which she argued did not match the promise of a brand-new car.

According to Saaka, the vehicle was immobile and eventually left abandoned in the campus parking lot. She highlighted several interior issues, including loose panels, a broken glove compartment, and missing grab handles, stating that such problems are unacceptable for a brand-new vehicle.
